隅　英二　Eiji Sumi

Biography
Eiji Sumi is a Japanese artist based in Bangkok, Thailand, moved from Tokyo to Tokyo 1994 and had stayed  in New York until 2012 where he has been creating artwork not only fit in the white Cube but in urban spaces by applying optical, multimedia in collaborations with various fields.  While his work continued to evoke and extend the physical sensations of people living in megacities, he has started engaging in art-science practices with keen sensitivity to social issues, using his mixed media approaches to research materials contextualizing various forms and ideas. Sumi has gained international recognition, holding numerous exhibitions and being curated by renowned curator such as  Eric Shiner, Gridthiya Gaweewong, Honor Harger, Brian Curtin, Keiichi Miyagawa, Angkrit Ajchariyasopho, Lyno Vuth, Jirat Ratthawongjirakul and Ni-kun amongst others. In 2012, Sumi moved to Bangkok and  Sumi was shortlisted for the 2017 Sovereign Asian Art Award in Hong Kong. In 2018, he exhibited at the Art Science Museum in Singapore in collaboration with the Nobel Museum for the 100th anniversary of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman, Chengdu TimeS Art Museum, Chengdu, China 2022, the Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto (2021), and the Hotel Asia Project (2015–2021) across Japan, China, Thailand, Indonesia. i Light Singapore 2022. He also participated in the Sawan Siwilai Exhibition in Bangkok (2022) among notable figures of Thai artists and had a solo exhibition at Gallery Ver in Bangkok (2018/2024).

Currently, Sumi is a full-time senior lecturer in Chulalongkorn University’s International Communication Design Program (CommDe) and a part-time lecturer in the International Program in Design and Architecture (INDA) within the university’s Faculty of Architecture and Bangkok University International Communication Design Program. He holds a BA from Rikkyo University in Tokyo and an MFA from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Bangkok.

経歴


隅英二は、立教大学産業関係学科を卒業後、1994年にニューヨークに渡り、光学、マルチメディアを応用した都市空間に設置されるインスタレーションや、多分野とのコ ラボレーションなどでホワイトキューブに収まらない芸術活動を重ねてきた。2012 年、国際交流基金支援による展覧会の参加を機に2012年にバンコクに拠点を移し、国 立チュラーロンコン大学コミュニケーションデザイン学科でタイの若手クリエーターの 育成に尽力する一方、巨大都市に暮らす人々の身体感覚を呼び起こし、その拡張を図 り、科学とアートの融合したインスタレーション、そして独自の国際感覚を背景に政治 社会問題をテーマにした写真作品を発表している。

多数の展覧会を開催し、エリック・シャイナー、グリディヤ・ガウィウォング、オナー・ハージャー、ブライアン・カーティン、宮川敬一、アングリット・アチャリヤソポ、リノ・ヴット、ジラート・ラッタウォンジラクン、ニークンなど著名なキュレーターによるキュレーションを受けています。2012年にバンコクに移住後、2017年に香港で開催された「ソブリン・アジアン・アート・アワード」のファイナリストに選出されました。

2018年には、シンガポールのアートサイエンスミュージアムでノーベル博物館との共同企画により、ノーベル賞受賞物理学者リチャード・ファインマンの受賞100周年記念展覧会に参加。また、2022年には成都タイムズ美術館（中国・成都）、2021年に熊本市現代美術館、2015〜2021年には「ホテルアジアプロジェクト」（日本、中国、タイ、インドネシアで開催）、および2022年には「i Light Singapore」にも参加しました。さらに、2022年にバンコクで開催された「サワン・シウィライ展」では、タイの著名なアーティストたちとともに展示に参加し、バンコクのギャラリー・ヴァーでは2018年と2024年に個展を開催しています。

現在、隅はチュラロンコン大学の国際コミュニケーションデザインプログラム（CommDe）でフルタイムの上級講師を務めるほか、同大学の建築学部内の国際デザイン建築プログラム（INDA）やバンコク大学の国際コミュニケーションデザインプログラムで非常勤講師としても教鞭をとっています。隅は東京の立教大学社会学学士号を、バンコクのモンクット王工科大学で美術学修士号（MFA）を取得しています。
