Under-Construction
in Collaboration with Niklas Möller,
Under Construction is a mixed-media exhibition composed of paintings and installations that emerge from Eiji Sumi’s ongoing research into urban landscapes and the visual language of rapidly developing cities. Influenced by his long-standing fascination with construction sites, the works examine the dynamic and often contradictory processes that shape contemporary urban environments.
By translating the repetitive patterns and structural elements found in scaffolding, temporary architecture, and construction frameworks into his paintings, and juxtaposing them with found objects collected from construction sites, Sumi constructs an immersive spatial environment. The exhibition transports viewers into a scene suspended between progressive expansion and dystopian decay, reflecting the ambiguous nature of urban development where growth and deterioration coexist.
In Under Construction, Sumi further experiments with liberating painting from the conventional confines of the frame. Through the placement of paintings in dialogue with sculptural components and installations, the works extend into the surrounding space, forming a sequence of mixed-media environments that blur the boundaries between painting, object, and architectural structure.
The exhibition is part of Sumi’s continuous investigation into the transformation of urban landscapes and the psychological atmosphere produced by cities in constant construction. Contributing to the project is New York–based Swedish sound designer Niklas Möller, who collaborated with Sumi by composing a sound installation specifically for the exhibition. The sound element evokes the rhythms and mechanical ambience of construction sites, further immersing viewers in a spatial experience that resonates between urban transformation, uncertainty, and anticipation.
