Whisper of the Forest

Sumi's Whisper of the Forest draws upon the tapestry of animism, mythology, and the environmental significance of Thailand’s mangrove ecosystems responds to sustainable challenges with modern environmental advocacy.

Mangrove ecosystems, positioned between land, river, and sea, serve as nurseries for marine life, natural barriers against erosion, and critical carbon sinks mitigating climate change. However, since the 1970s in Thailand, shrimp farming and deforestation has driven widespread mangrove destruction, leaving communities vulnerable to natural disasters and ecological degradation concerning the necessity of immediate global action beyond Thailand.

Through water, light, and symbolic forms, Whisper of the Forest embodies the spiritual, cultural, and ecological revitalization within mangrove forests. The installation honors ancient traditions that view these forests as sanctuaries of life and lore as well as applying Sumi’s scientific approach to enhance biodiversity through his lighting mediums. By weaving together the sanctified beliefs of the tree spirit Phi Ton Mai, and the protective creature Naga Mangrove, Whisper of the Forest fosters a sanctuary that respects sustainability and the interconnectedness of life envisioning  the coexistence of humanity and nature to  to safeguard these vital ecosystems for future generations.

The installation emphasizes spiritual and scientific essence through custom lighting sculptures designed to interact with the forest environment. These sculptures emit 360-degree directional light that illuminates tree branches and casts reflections on the water.The illuminated forms reference the traditional practice of marking sacred trees with colored fabrics, inviting viewers to experience the mangrove forest as a dynamic and transformative space where the spirit of mythology lives within the forest. This light is also meticulously coordinated in color and foam —not to disrupt the ecosystem, but to stimulate it, creating a "home" for the various creatures that inhabit the forest.

While ongoing human conservation efforts aim to protect mangroves, Sumi critiques their transformation into controlled conservation models that risk losing the authenticity of untouched nature. This concern engages with Jean Baudrillard’s concept of hyperreality in Simulacra and Simulation—how the unreal becomes real, and furthermore, how icons proliferate and reshape meaning. Within this paradigm shift, Sumi seeks to counterbalance the contradictions of flawed systems and explores the potential of spiritual icons to embody hyperreality. Sumi envisions art as a tool of resistance, transcending the limitations of human development. Art becomes a means of rekindling respect and care for the natural world—a beacon of hope that urges renewed harmony between people and nature.

本プロジェクトWhisper of the Forest（森の囁き）は、アニミズム、神話、そしてタイのマングローブ生態系が持つ環境的意義を交差させ、現代の環境保全における持続可能性のあり方に、問いを投げかける試みる作品です。

陸、川、海が交わる結節点に位置するマングローブは、海洋生物の揺りかごであり、浸食に対する天然の防壁、そして気候変動を緩和する極めて重要なカーボンシンクです。しかし、1970年代以降のタイにおけるエビの養殖や森林伐採は、広範な破壊を招いてきました。そしてこのマングロー生態系の劣化はもはや一国に留まらない地球規模の喫緊の課題となっています。

本作Whisper of the Forest（森の囁き）は、水、光、そしてシンボリズムを通して、マングローブの森に宿る精神的・文化的・生態学的な再生を表現するインスタレーションです。森林を生命と伝承の聖域と捉えてきたタイ古来の信仰を尊重すると同時に、光を用いた表現によって生物多様性保護への新たな視点を提示しています。作品には、タイで信仰されている樹木の精霊「ピー・トン・マイ（Phi Ton Mai）」や、水の守護神「ナーガ（Naga）」の象徴が光というメディアムに変換されて取り入れられています。これらの神話的イメージを通して、自然を生命のつながりが宿る聖域として捉え直し、人間と自然の共存の可能性を問いかけています。

このインスタレーションは、森林環境と相互作用するように設計された、カスタムレンズとアイリス（Iris）設備を用いた照明彫刻を通じ、精神的かつ科学的な表現を強調しています。公園内に設置された光のインスタレーションから放たれる360度の水平方向の指向性を持つ光は、樹木の幹を緻密に照らし出し、水面に反射を投じます。その光の形態は、聖木に色とりどりの布を巻き付ける伝統的な習慣を引用したものであり、鑑賞者を神話の精神が宿る変容的な空間へと誘います。 またこの光は森林の生態系を損なうのではなく、むしろ刺激を与えるために、特定の色彩（波長）と形状へと細密にコーディネートされています。それは、光を通じて森に棲む多様な生物たちの「住処」を創出することを目指しているためです。

Whisper of the Forest（森の囁き）は、人間中心の開発への「抵抗」であり、コミュニティーにとって自然界への敬意と慈しみをあたえる手段であり、人間と自然の間の新たな調和を促す試みでもあります。


**ピートンマイ（Phi Ton Mai）は、タイの民間信仰において樹木に宿るとされる精霊であり、人々は神聖な木に色布を結ぶことで敬意を示してきました。

**ナーガ（Naga）**は、東南アジアの神話に登場する蛇の姿をした水の守護神です。寺院の装飾では、ナーガの目に色ガラスがはめ込まれ、神聖な力を象徴する表現として用いられています。
